Farewell, Michael.
Before an audience of millions, a galaxy of stars and Michael Jackson’s loved ones paid tribute to the pop legend Tuesday at a memorial that ended in a torrent of tears from his young daughter.
The two-hour ceremony inside Los Angeles’ Staples Center was more subdued than spectacular, with little of the high drama that marked Jackson’s remarkable life and sad death.
There were somber speeches, soulful ballads and no shortage of superlatives. Usher broke down and Brooke Shields fought to keep her composure.
Thunderous applause shook the packed coliseum when Motown Records founder Berry Gordy said Jackson’s nickname didn’t do him justice.
“Sure, there were some sad times and some questionable decisions on his part, but Michael Jackson accomplished everything he dreamed of,” Gordy said.
“The King of Pop is not big enough for him. I think he is simply the greatest entertainer that ever lived.”
It wasn’t until Jackson’s black-clad daughter - so sheltered by her father - tentatively approached the microphone at the end that the event reached its emotional crescendo.
“Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine,” Paris Jackson, 11, said, marking the first time the world has ever heard her voice.
“And I just want to say I love him so much.”
There was barely a dry eye in the packed, 20,000-seat arena. …
