launched a multi-million dollar business eager to feed the hunger of his
loyal fans.

Michael Jackson is about to hit the big screen. His records are selling faster than ever before, and next week an exhibition opens of the costumes he would have worn at the concert venue that he never made it to. Jackson may no longer be with us, but the pop business isn’t the kind that lets a star’s death get in the way of his comeback.

Edited from 80 hours of footage shot during rehearsals for the shows Jackson was scheduled to have given in London earlier this year, This Is It – billed as “a special gift to Michael’s fans” – may be of questionable taste, but the frenzy surrounding its release leaves little doubt as to how much more valuable the singer is dead than alive.

For one thing, the movie is no gift. “It’s going to make a gazillion dollars,” a Hollywood executive told Entertainment Weekly. “There’s never been anything like this. They should call it Dead Man Moonwalking.” The advance sales have already overtaken those for the new Twilight sequel, and Sony Pictures, the studio behind the film, is rethinking its earlier plan to limit the run to two weeks.

Tim Richards, head of Britain’s Vue cinema chain, says: “The demand here has been unprecedented. In the first 48 hours alone we recorded 40,000 sales, eclipsing advance buying for films including Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. As of Friday, we’d sold 74,000 tickets, and sales show no sign of slowing down. It’s a phenomenon.” The movie, in cinemas on Wednesday, is expected to go to DVD early next year, adding momentum to the already mighty Jackson commercial juggernaut.
